Archaeological Museum, Amaravathi - 96

The museum has sculptures and monographs from the Chalukyan and Kakatiya periods. A pictorial depiction of Buddha’s life and teachings are among the antiquities on display.

Guys the place Amaravati, is located on the right bank of the river Krishna at a distance of 35 km north of the railway station of Guntur town. It is also a center of pilgrimage, known as Amareswaram.

Guys, the Amaravati school of art concerns a leading position in the history of Indian Art. With its beginning in 3rd century BC the Amaravati spreads out its chapters through the wandflower of sculptural wealth that once decorated the Mahachaitya the imperial monument of the Buddhists situated here with its history extending over a period of a millennium and a half.

The gallery has picked out examples of the art traditions of Amaravati are exhibited. The lotus and the purnakumbha motifs are typical of Amaravati Art conveying propitiousness and teemingness. The two drum blocks describing the Stupas, in bas relief give a fair idea of the structure. Buddha in these panels during the early period is represented symbolically in the form of ‘Svastika’ mark on a cushioned seat over a throne (Vajrasana) under the Bodhi tree in one case and a Flaming pillar (agni skanda) in another case. Over the dome are depicted the Jatakas in low relief. The standing Buddha secured from Gummadidurru is datable to eight century AD.

The full size flowery bull (nandisvara) of the Satavahana period in round is a beautiful piece of art picked up from the local Amaresvara temple. The garland and bearers of a copingstone, the images of Vajrayana period, and a Jaina Tirthankara of medieval times are quite interesting in this gallery.

Earlier forms of Ganesa and Ganesani among the Yakshaganas carrying the garland. Lakshmi in earlier period and the panel showing division of the relics of Lord Buddha by the disputing princes on the coping of the railing, are a few notable pieces of art.

Asiatic Society Museum, Kolkata - 92

The museum hosts rare, valuable and illustrated manuscripts from all over Indian and South-East Asia. The exhibits include the Bhabru Rock Edict of Ashoka, copper plates belonging to 11th and 12th century A.D., and a collection of rare books.

Asiatic Society Old
Guys, Asiatic Society was demonstrated on 15 January 1784. Its founder Sir William Jones (1746-1794) began his work with a dream, that projected a centre for Asian studies including almost everything concerning man and nature within the geographical limits of the continent. Most of the secrets of this vast land, like its old inscriptions in Brahmi, were still undeciphered, and Comparative Philology as a discipline or science was not yet born.

In the early days of the Asiatic Society, William Jones for all his efforts could not procure even a slice of land wherein to house his dream. The Society which in no time was to be regarded as the first and best of its kind in the whole world had no permanent address, no fixed place for holding its meetings and, which was most disconcerting, no funds.

Guys here you must visit at the Library of Asiatic Society. You can find here following interested books like:

1. Printed Books and Periodicals
2. Manuscripts and Archives and
3. Museum Objects

The Printed Books Department has four sections such as,

1. European Languages
2. Sanskritic and other Modern Indian Languages
3. Perso-Arabic and Urdu and
4. Sino-Tibetan and South-Asian Languages

Asiatic Society New
Here you can find printed books from almost all the major languages of the world. There are about 1,49,000 volumes, particularly rich in works on Indology and Asiatic Lore, and in standard philological and scientific serials. The printed books in this department range in date from the latter half of the fifteenth century A.D. and one of its special features consists in the many items of rare works, otherwise unavailable, or scarcely available, including books printed in India in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Total number of Manuscripts in 26 scripts and languages are 47,000 (approx). The total numbers of Journals are about 80,000.

So, I suggest you if you are on the tour of Kolkata then do not miss the opportunity to visit at Asiatic Society Museum. You can visit here from 10.00 am to 06.00 pm except on weekends and Public Holidays. No fees has been charged to visit here.
