Holidays in Chamba : The dominion of clouds - 1

Chamba, belongs to Uttaranchal state and located at High up in the Tehri Hills at 6,500 ft, Chamba is a steep 59-km climb from Rishikesh, 55 km from Mussoorie and 283 km N of Delhi.

Route from Delhi NH58 to Rishikesh via Haridwar; state highway to Chamba via Narendranagar.

One moment we were on a hilltop, the next on a cloud. A wispy caravan lifted up almost from nowhere and all too suddenly, and then we were adrift in a world all our own, astride a cold cloud. The transport from the real to the magical was quite as sudden and startling as Harry Potter crashing into that brick wall on Platform 93/4 to enter the world of Hogwarts: the cloud swept up the hill and past the hilltop and transformed everything. Suddenly, the sky had vanished and the hills all around were gone.

The little town and its people and its twisting lanes and distant lights had all disappeared. And all there was was a translucent cotton-wool jungle drowning in its own silence.

Someone switched on the sodium vapour lamps on the winding drive up to the resort: they looked like blurred blossoms popping in a dream. Then Sadhuram emerged from the mists bearing a tray of cosied tea and said this is what Chamba is like most evenings and nights - the dominion of clouds.

We were inside the mammoth glasshouse they have erected on a promontory overlooking the merging valleys cut by the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. Suddenly, enveloped by nothing but floating cloud and sodium lights twinkling in thick dew, it was like being on deck chairs in a skyship. It is like no place you might expect within seven hours of Delhi.

Why isn't Uttaranchal's Chamba as celebrated or as well known as Himachal's? Perhaps only because this is a new state and they haven't worked too hard on publicising it. At times you are almost thankful they haven't. Lack of exposure has kept in Chamba what most hill stations have lost or are fast losing the air of remoteness, of being somewhere else, somewhere special.

Chamba is a getaway in a very real sense. When you get to Chamba, you have got away from most of the things that you want to get away from in a metropolis - crowds, traffic, pollution, decibels, treadmill pace, routine.

Where to eat at Auli - 4

Because of Auli's proximity to the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, building and development is thankfully restricted to the GMVN complex and Cliff Top Club Resort. With no dosa / paratha / chowmein dhabas littering the slopes, be content with the fare at the two hotels. There are no bars in the vicinity so if you fancy a hot rum by the nonfire in the evening, carry your own bottle - with some discretion lest you offend the religious sensibilities of the many yatris around.

Around Auli:

Rudraprayag:

Jim Corbett may have put Rudraprayag's name on the world map for man-eating leopards, but it's difficult to imagine anything wilder than a tabby cat prowling around in the thin scrub covering the surrounding hills. What is of breathtaking magnificence though is the swirling confluence of the Alanknanda and Mandakini rivers, around which the town has grown.

A must-visit is the Koteshwar Mahadev Temple on the banks of the Alaknanda. Less temple than cave and adorned by ferns and moss, the devout can observe hundreds of spontaneously generated Shivlings cared out of rock by the patient dripping of water. It is a charming spot even for non-believers. Equally charming are the Rudranathji and Chamunda Devi mandirs, overlooking the confluence of the two rivers just across the bridge at Rudraprayag. Shri Rudranathji is famed to be the meditation place of the great mediator and troublemaker Narad Muni. Just below, the goddess watches over the union of the rivers from her modest temple. She is taken care of by a delightful old mataji - Prem Giri, of the Juna Akhara - who, if she is in the mood, can prove to be a veritable library of myth and folkore.

Rudraprayag is a food place to break your journey if you are driving up from Delhi, as it will limit the next day's driving to Auli to just 4 1/2 hours. Just off the Joshimath Road, 3 km after Rudraprayag Hotel Monal Resort (Tel. : 01364-233901-05; Tariff: Rs. 1,600 - 4, 000) is a new, large and pleasant hotel. Probably the best of its kind along the entire rishikesh-Auli NH58 route, it offers a children's playground, machan, and a restaurant.

The GMVN Resort (Tel.: 233347; Tariff: Rs. 110-1,100) is, at best, quite disappointing. A pity, since Uttaranchal is trying hard to attract tourists.

Getting at Auli:

Rail: Nearest railhead: Haridwar (320 km/ 7 hrs). Hire a Sumo (Rs. 250-350) from Haridwar. Bargain hard for Rs. 250.

Road: Auli is just 16 km off NH58 that connects Delhi to Badrinath. The highway is good, but it's a long drive. Break journey at Rudraprayag on the way up and at Rishikesh on the way down.

Time to Visit at Auli:

It is best between December and March when Auli is carpeted with snow, even if winter sees below zero temperatures.

Where to stay at Auli - 3

At Auli, there are two options. If your budget is elastic, the luxury private hotel is recommended over the basic GMVN hotel.

What a magnificent view! From the warmth of your room at Cliff Top Club Resort (Tel.: 01389-223217-20/27; Tariff: Rs. 3,000-7,500), gaze at 180 degrees of some of the highest snow peaks in the world. Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kamet, Mana Parvat, Dunagiri, Bethatoli and Neelkanth. Friendly staff and good food provide the pampering you need after a tiring day on the slopes. But the snow, a boon to skiers, tends to cramp the non-sporty kind, so if you tire easily from gazing at the view or clomping thigh-deep in snow, bring novels and indoor games along.

Keep in mind the hotel tends to get completely snowbound. If you are driving up, the car must be left on the road near the GMVN hotel below or, if the snowfall is heavy, at Joshimath. Luggage and you can be transported up by cable car from Joshimath or chair lift from GMVN Auli.

Your only other option in Auli is the GMVN Skiing and Tourist Resort, (Tel.: 223208 / 305; Tariff:Rs. 950 - 1,450), located at 9,5000 ft. The plus point of the place is that, unlike the completely snowbound Cliff Top, it is only a short slide down to the main road. So walks are possible up to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Ski School (open only to the armed forces), or down the road through the oak and conifer forest.

If Auli is "house full", stay in Joshimath and take the cable car every day to Auli. Most hotels in Joshimath are quite basic, catering mostly to pilgrims. But the town now boasts an excellent option in Chardham Camp (Tel.: 01389-222712; Tariff: Rs. 3,200), located on the main NH58, just five minutes before Joshimath. The camp arranges tours to pilgrimage spots in the region and many adventure activities to fill your time between prayer. Your next best option is Hotel Dronagiri (Tel.: 222221 / 54; Tariff: Rs. 550 - 2,500).

To stay near the ropeway to Auli, choose Hotel Kamet (Tel.: 222155; Tariff: Rs. 500-800). The GMVN Tourist Rest House (Tel.: 222226/118; Tariff: Rs. 130-750) is in Upper Bazar at the heart of Joshimath, and ,Hotel Shriram (Tel.: 222332; Tariff: Rs. 400-750) is next door.

Essentials at Auli:

Make sure you have a minimum level of fitness to reduce chances of injuries while skiing at Auli. Train for at least a month in the gym, else run or jog for 20 minutes thrice a week for a month.

Dressing warm:

Your body is best kept warm using many layers. Wear warm, Long Johns under your clothes and windproof pants and an anorak on top. Pack a pair of woolen gloves that can be worn inside the ski mittens. It's essential to start the day with dry socks inside warm, dry boots.

Protecting your head:

The body loses heat through the head, so cover it up. Make sure your cap covers your ears.

Protecting your eyes :

Snowblindness is painful. Always wear sunglasses. You will need the extra protection and visibility enhancement of goggles, which you can rent form GMVN.

Protecting your skin:

At 9,500 - 10, 500 ft the air is thin and lets a greater quantum of UV rays enter the atmosphere. Added to this is the bounce and glare of snow. Apply liberal quantities of sunblock and high-SPF lip balm.

Re-hydration: At high altitudes, drink plenty of water of juice, but avoid alcohol and caffeine. Carry a water bottle. However thirsty you are, never eat snow.
