Holidays in Chamba : The dominion of clouds - 1

Chamba, belongs to Uttaranchal state and located at High up in the Tehri Hills at 6,500 ft, Chamba is a steep 59-km climb from Rishikesh, 55 km from Mussoorie and 283 km N of Delhi.

Route from Delhi NH58 to Rishikesh via Haridwar; state highway to Chamba via Narendranagar.

One moment we were on a hilltop, the next on a cloud. A wispy caravan lifted up almost from nowhere and all too suddenly, and then we were adrift in a world all our own, astride a cold cloud. The transport from the real to the magical was quite as sudden and startling as Harry Potter crashing into that brick wall on Platform 93/4 to enter the world of Hogwarts: the cloud swept up the hill and past the hilltop and transformed everything. Suddenly, the sky had vanished and the hills all around were gone.

The little town and its people and its twisting lanes and distant lights had all disappeared. And all there was was a translucent cotton-wool jungle drowning in its own silence.

Someone switched on the sodium vapour lamps on the winding drive up to the resort: they looked like blurred blossoms popping in a dream. Then Sadhuram emerged from the mists bearing a tray of cosied tea and said this is what Chamba is like most evenings and nights - the dominion of clouds.

We were inside the mammoth glasshouse they have erected on a promontory overlooking the merging valleys cut by the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. Suddenly, enveloped by nothing but floating cloud and sodium lights twinkling in thick dew, it was like being on deck chairs in a skyship. It is like no place you might expect within seven hours of Delhi.

Why isn't Uttaranchal's Chamba as celebrated or as well known as Himachal's? Perhaps only because this is a new state and they haven't worked too hard on publicising it. At times you are almost thankful they haven't. Lack of exposure has kept in Chamba what most hill stations have lost or are fast losing the air of remoteness, of being somewhere else, somewhere special.

Chamba is a getaway in a very real sense. When you get to Chamba, you have got away from most of the things that you want to get away from in a metropolis - crowds, traffic, pollution, decibels, treadmill pace, routine.

Where to eat at Auli - 4

Because of Auli's proximity to the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, building and development is thankfully restricted to the GMVN complex and Cliff Top Club Resort. With no dosa / paratha / chowmein dhabas littering the slopes, be content with the fare at the two hotels. There are no bars in the vicinity so if you fancy a hot rum by the nonfire in the evening, carry your own bottle - with some discretion lest you offend the religious sensibilities of the many yatris around.

Around Auli:

Rudraprayag:

Jim Corbett may have put Rudraprayag's name on the world map for man-eating leopards, but it's difficult to imagine anything wilder than a tabby cat prowling around in the thin scrub covering the surrounding hills. What is of breathtaking magnificence though is the swirling confluence of the Alanknanda and Mandakini rivers, around which the town has grown.

A must-visit is the Koteshwar Mahadev Temple on the banks of the Alaknanda. Less temple than cave and adorned by ferns and moss, the devout can observe hundreds of spontaneously generated Shivlings cared out of rock by the patient dripping of water. It is a charming spot even for non-believers. Equally charming are the Rudranathji and Chamunda Devi mandirs, overlooking the confluence of the two rivers just across the bridge at Rudraprayag. Shri Rudranathji is famed to be the meditation place of the great mediator and troublemaker Narad Muni. Just below, the goddess watches over the union of the rivers from her modest temple. She is taken care of by a delightful old mataji - Prem Giri, of the Juna Akhara - who, if she is in the mood, can prove to be a veritable library of myth and folkore.

Rudraprayag is a food place to break your journey if you are driving up from Delhi, as it will limit the next day's driving to Auli to just 4 1/2 hours. Just off the Joshimath Road, 3 km after Rudraprayag Hotel Monal Resort (Tel. : 01364-233901-05; Tariff: Rs. 1,600 - 4, 000) is a new, large and pleasant hotel. Probably the best of its kind along the entire rishikesh-Auli NH58 route, it offers a children's playground, machan, and a restaurant.

The GMVN Resort (Tel.: 233347; Tariff: Rs. 110-1,100) is, at best, quite disappointing. A pity, since Uttaranchal is trying hard to attract tourists.

Getting at Auli:

Rail: Nearest railhead: Haridwar (320 km/ 7 hrs). Hire a Sumo (Rs. 250-350) from Haridwar. Bargain hard for Rs. 250.

Road: Auli is just 16 km off NH58 that connects Delhi to Badrinath. The highway is good, but it's a long drive. Break journey at Rudraprayag on the way up and at Rishikesh on the way down.

Time to Visit at Auli:

It is best between December and March when Auli is carpeted with snow, even if winter sees below zero temperatures.

Where to stay at Auli - 3

At Auli, there are two options. If your budget is elastic, the luxury private hotel is recommended over the basic GMVN hotel.

What a magnificent view! From the warmth of your room at Cliff Top Club Resort (Tel.: 01389-223217-20/27; Tariff: Rs. 3,000-7,500), gaze at 180 degrees of some of the highest snow peaks in the world. Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kamet, Mana Parvat, Dunagiri, Bethatoli and Neelkanth. Friendly staff and good food provide the pampering you need after a tiring day on the slopes. But the snow, a boon to skiers, tends to cramp the non-sporty kind, so if you tire easily from gazing at the view or clomping thigh-deep in snow, bring novels and indoor games along.

Keep in mind the hotel tends to get completely snowbound. If you are driving up, the car must be left on the road near the GMVN hotel below or, if the snowfall is heavy, at Joshimath. Luggage and you can be transported up by cable car from Joshimath or chair lift from GMVN Auli.

Your only other option in Auli is the GMVN Skiing and Tourist Resort, (Tel.: 223208 / 305; Tariff:Rs. 950 - 1,450), located at 9,5000 ft. The plus point of the place is that, unlike the completely snowbound Cliff Top, it is only a short slide down to the main road. So walks are possible up to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Ski School (open only to the armed forces), or down the road through the oak and conifer forest.

If Auli is "house full", stay in Joshimath and take the cable car every day to Auli. Most hotels in Joshimath are quite basic, catering mostly to pilgrims. But the town now boasts an excellent option in Chardham Camp (Tel.: 01389-222712; Tariff: Rs. 3,200), located on the main NH58, just five minutes before Joshimath. The camp arranges tours to pilgrimage spots in the region and many adventure activities to fill your time between prayer. Your next best option is Hotel Dronagiri (Tel.: 222221 / 54; Tariff: Rs. 550 - 2,500).

To stay near the ropeway to Auli, choose Hotel Kamet (Tel.: 222155; Tariff: Rs. 500-800). The GMVN Tourist Rest House (Tel.: 222226/118; Tariff: Rs. 130-750) is in Upper Bazar at the heart of Joshimath, and ,Hotel Shriram (Tel.: 222332; Tariff: Rs. 400-750) is next door.

Essentials at Auli:

Make sure you have a minimum level of fitness to reduce chances of injuries while skiing at Auli. Train for at least a month in the gym, else run or jog for 20 minutes thrice a week for a month.

Dressing warm:

Your body is best kept warm using many layers. Wear warm, Long Johns under your clothes and windproof pants and an anorak on top. Pack a pair of woolen gloves that can be worn inside the ski mittens. It's essential to start the day with dry socks inside warm, dry boots.

Protecting your head:

The body loses heat through the head, so cover it up. Make sure your cap covers your ears.

Protecting your eyes :

Snowblindness is painful. Always wear sunglasses. You will need the extra protection and visibility enhancement of goggles, which you can rent form GMVN.

Protecting your skin:

At 9,500 - 10, 500 ft the air is thin and lets a greater quantum of UV rays enter the atmosphere. Added to this is the bounce and glare of snow. Apply liberal quantities of sunblock and high-SPF lip balm.

Things to see and do at Auli - 2

Auli is not for the meek-hearted or the lazy. But apart from the exhilaration of the successful downhill run, there are also other magical moments like watching the dawn break behind Nanda Devi; struggling to describe to oneself the exact shade of the indescribable, pale blue in the hole in the snow left behind by your boot; watching the sky open up its bounty at night, and the snowflakes floating gently, soundlessly to earth. All is peace, all is beauty. Yes, Auli can be balm to a city-wearied heart.

Learning to ski:

Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam offers 7-days non-certificate and 14-days certificate courses for beginners from January to March every year. Alternatively, you could learn privately from the freelance instructors hanging about the slopes. If you are staying at Cliff Top Club Resort and are short on time, try their instructors. The Rs. 500/- for equipment and instruction, plus the Rs. 200/- tip, was reasonable, considering the progress I made in one day.

Fees for the courses include board, lodging (shared accommodation), ski equipment, lift and training. Economy and regular categories will be accommodated at GMVN Auli, and deluxe at the Cliff Top Club Resort with buffet meals. You can also opt for per day charges if you don not wish to enroll in the course.

PER DAY FEES Skies adults Rs. 200-250, children Rs. 150-200; lessons Rs. 125-175; gloves Rs. 150; goggles Rs. 50. The range indicates half and full-day fees.

7 DAYS COURSE FEE Indians Rs. 4,000 (economy), Rs. 11,000 (regular) and Rs. 14,000 (deluxe); foreigners Rs. 5,100 (economy), Rs. 20,000 (regular) and Rs. 25, 000 (deluxe)

14 DAYS COURSE FEES Indians Rs. 7,900 (economy), Rs, 22,000 (regular) and Rs. 27,000 (deluxe); foreigners Rs. 10,000 (economy), Rs. 40,000 (regular), Rs. 50,000 (deluxe).

NOTE: Course rates for Indian couples are the same as for one foreigner.

Joshimath:

The great sage Adi Shankaracharya is supposed to have wandered into Joshimath and gained enlightenment here. Alas, it is hard to imagine this treeless town on the highway to the holler sites of Hanuman Chatti and Badrinath as a spiritual seat of any importance. Still, check out the Narsingh and Garuda temples, the Shankaracharya Math, and the amar kalp tree, believed to be over 2,5000 years old. Drive down to the hot springs of Tapovan, just 14 km away.

What in it for kids:

Take the kids along and bung a pair of skis on their little feet and watch them fly after the initial hesitation. If they tire of the concentrated activity, then leave them to their own devices after making sure they are warmly clad. After all, it is not every day that one can make snowmen and snow castles in the tropics.

Auli : It is time to Ski - 1

It is a saying that, " Kashmir's loss is Uttaranchal's gain!
Yeah! It is absolutely right. In fact, Auli is not large. The entire skiing area is about 5-7 km, but since this pasture is located way up between 9,500 and 10, 5000 ft in eastern Garhwal, it commands excellent in eastern Garhwal, it commands excellent views of surrounding peaks which soar well over 23,000 ft. The air is cold, fresh and scented with pine; the skies are a stunning bright blue and only occasionally marked by a few tattered clouds.

Auli - located in the state of Uttaranchal; in the north-eastern corner of Chamoli District in Garhwal, 15 km SE of Joshimath and 492 km NE of Delhi.

This may not be Aspen or St. Moritz, but hey, it is India of 50-degrees-in-the-shade fame, and it's pretty miraculous that we have slopes with wonderful, soft powdery snow at all. And the Uttaranchalis are trying: a spanking new cable car system, modestly called the ropeway, traverses 4 km up the hill from Joshimath, transporting you over the tops of oak and fir trees to Auli. And when your swoop down the slopes, you do not have to worry about the trudge back up: the baby slopes have a 2,620-ft chair lift to haul you to the top. Two imported snow-packing machines keep the slopes in order, preventing the formation of ice or crust.

So, forget another winter at the beach and head north instead. After a week on the slopes you will be confident enough to whiz down a mountain and execute a fancy parallel turn to a halt. Skiing is wonderful exercise but, be warned, it is dangerous - your tummy disappears, your muscles tone up, your skin glows with good health. It could become addictive. So, just go for skiing at Auli.

Where to stay and eat, Tourist Offices at Pauri : Honeymoon Place - 3

Where to stay:

Pauri is hardly visited by pilgrim traffic and rarely has the GMVN Tourist Rest House (Tel.: 01368-222359; Tarrif: Rs. 175 – 400) been full – this is also your best option for stay. There are a few private establishments here, including Sun ‘n’ Snow (Tel.: 222242, Tarrif: Rs. 150-600) and Hotel Frontier (Tel.: 222270, 223234; Tariff: Rs. 200), both near the bus stand. Hotel Shivalik (Tel.: 222442, 223719; Tariff: Rs. 125, dorm Rs. 50) is a very cheap option on the Mall. It has its own restaurant, but offers only shared loos.

Where to eat:

At Pauri, there are quite a few choices. The Tourist Rest House runs a mess which offers passable fare. Avoid the places close to the bus stand and look for the joints favored by the locals. The best options are Madhuban and Relish on the Mall.

Around Pauri:

Srinagar (30 kms):

The former capital of Tehri Garhwal, Srinagar on the banks of the glorious Alaknanda River is an important junction, with roads from Rishikesh, Kotdwar and Badrinath all passing through. The town is also the seat of Garhwal University. There are many picturesque spots from which you can view the Alaknanda, or even set up a picnic by its banks. Do visit the Keshoral Math, Kamleshwar and Shankar Math temples here. GMVN runs a tourist guest house in Srinagar.

Khirsu (45 km):

Like a fairy tale crafted by the Brothers Grimm, just a short 19-km trek down the Kandoliya Hills from Pauri, is Khirsu, a tiny Garhwali jewel hidden in a pine forest. Descend past evergreen pines and elegant spruce covered with ferns and bright green moss, apple trees and mushrooms in the damp and dark undergrowth. Emerge all too soon in tiny Khirsu. In this tiny hamlet, the mountain experience is all yours – and yours alone.

A special treat if you make it the trek in spring is the fragrance of flowers filling the crisp mountain air. Only a handful of tourists visit Khirsu, so no Bisleri bottles or deformed Coke cans disfigure the forest paths. There is also a motorable and road from Pauri if you can’t be bothered to walk.

Stay at the GMVN Tourist Rest House (Tel.: 01368-228509; Tarrif: Rs. 350-600, dorm Rs. 120), which has clean, comfortable rooms. Simple meals are available, or you can drive up to Pauri for food.

Things to see and do at Pauri : A Honeymoon Place - 2

The old travelers saying that, “wandering one gathers honey” is quite appropriate in Pauri, and walking is well worth the effort. The magic of the town is best discovered if you leave the crowded markets and colonies behind and climb up towards the forested ridges.

Kandoliya and Bubakhal:

The temple of the local deity, Kandoliya Devta, is located in a thick forest, 2 km from Pauri on the road to Lansdowne. The walk affords a stunning view of Himalayan peaks and the Gangwarsyun Valley. Majestic oaks, swaying pines, deodars, rhododendrons and a variety of flowers lining the road make for a very pleasant, leisurely afternoon stroll to Bubakhal, another 4 km towards Lansdowne, Bubakhal, itself no more than a tiny mountain village, is a junction from where several minor roads snake across to the many villages on the slopes of the Kandoliya Hills.

Chaukhamba Viewpoint:

Take a good 4 km walk on the road towards the Dwarikhal Forest, to the ridge overlooking the Idwal Valley and Chaukhamba – Mountain of Four Pillars – a peak named thus for its squarish shape. Behind this mighty peak lies the massive Gangotri glacier that feeds the Ganga. Neelkanth, about 540 ft shorter, is in the foreground. Bhaukhamba forms a triangle with the holy peaks of Kedarnath (to the east of the horizon) and Badrinath (not visible). Dead east, the glorious peak of Nanda Devi thrusts into the sky, marking the border between Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts. Afterwards, you can set up a picnic next to the clear, freshwater spring in Dwarikhal Forest nearby.

Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev:

It’s a steep trek up to this ancient 8th century temple, but the view that catches you by surprise makes it all worthwhile. The Shiva Temple here is within a large complex were scores of mendicants stay throughout the year. For the devout, there is a Shivling, a stature of Nandi and an ancient drum. For others, there are some more stunning views of the entire collage of peaks visible from the Idwal Ridge.

Ransi:

Trudge half a kilometer uphill to get to Ransi. At 6,995 ft. Ransi is a huge step in the mountain where Pauri’s lone sports stadium lies – the highest in Uttaranchal. This vast, flat stretch of green also serves as a beautiful picnic spot. On a sunny day, you could even spread out a blanket and doze off to the chirruping of birds and the rustling of pines.

Adwani:

The tiny village of Adwani, connected by a well-maintained road and 17 km from Pauri, boasts dozens of great picnic spots.

Pauri : An impressive welcome for Honeymoon Lovers - 1

An impressive welcome awaits the visitor traveling up the Kotdwar road for Pauri. As you drive past the tiny village of Bubakhal, the mighty Chaukhamba thrusting into the sky on the horizon heralds your arrival at the threshold of the gods.

Pilgrims making their way to the holy Char Dham sites tramp through neighbouring Chamoli, which has grabbed a large share of the pilgrim pie for itself. This is why Pauri, despite being the Head Quarter of Pauri Garhwal remains serene. Pines and deodars still whisper in the breeze, and silent forests bask in the Himalayan sunlight. The Messmore College and other British era buildings complete the picture of an unchanged Raj Hills station. And therein lays the charm of Pauri for those looking for that feeling of being suspended in time.

For meals, the GMVN Tourist Rest House is one option. Else, if you are in a mood to experiment, there are a couple of dhabas near the bus stand. Some offer a good collection of pakoras and samosas. There are tow other dhabas, just before the main bazaar, where a simple meal of dal-roti-sabzi or some spicy chaat can be had.

Things to see and do at Lansdowne : A Honeymoon Resort - 2

Enjoy the untrammeled pleasure of a walking tour in and around the stimulating environs of these gentle slopes. In the not-so-distant past it was no surprise for a late night traveler to chance upon a solitary leopard who would walk past, too busy with his own agenda to bother about human beings. Silver fit, spruce and the elephant’s favorite bamboo forests cover the hills in and around Lansdowne. Carry some water and a few assorted munchies on your walk into the forests, and if you happen to be in Lansdowne some time around mid-June carry a raincoat or an umbrella.

Hike up to Tiffin Top for a glimpse of St. Mary’s Church, which, despite losing most of its glory over the years, show off beautiful stained glass windows.

Durga Devi Temple:

This locally important temple lies on the right bank of the Khoh River, 27 km from Lansdowne. The temple itself it really 13 ft inside a cave. Deep within is a Shivling and locals whisper that wishes made here are bound to be granted. Shivratri witnesses a throng of devotees at the temple.

Tarkeshwar Mahadev:

Tarkeshwar Mahadev is dedicated to Shiva, the god of Kedar Khand, which is the original name of the area that now comprises Kumaon and Garhwal. There is a mention of Kedar Khand in Skanda Purana, one of the ancient Hindu texts. Tarkeshwar is considered to be one of the ancient Siddhpeethas and it is nestled in a thick forest of deodar, blue pine and oak. Water pools around the temple lend an aura of mystery of the place. Tarkeshwar is on the road to the Kotdwar, 39 km from Lansdowne.

Jwaladevi Temple:

This famous temple is a 10 minute trek down to the banks of the Nawalika River, off the Lansdowne-Pauri Road, 42 kms from Lansdowne. This temple is most interesting for its legends. In ancient Garhwal, the demon king’s daughter Sachi wanted to marry Indra, the King of Heaven, who was not inclined to tie the nuptial knot with the besotted girl. Sachi prayed to her favorite deity, Jwalpadevi. Moved by the girl’s heartfelt prayers, the goddess granted her wish. Since then, Garhwalls say, a wish made here is often granted. Boon-seekers crowd the shrine during Ashtami in April and October.

Get Free Wordpress Themes Here

The subject matter of a conversation or discussion OR an unifying idea that is a recurrent element in literary or artistic work OR melodic subject of a musical composition OR an essay (especially one written as an assignment) OR provide with a particular theme or motive. Yeah! Guys, all these explanation shows the only one word - THEME.

But when I think about the theme then very first name comes in my mind i.e. wordpress themes. Yeah! I always fascinate about wordpress themes only because of its eye catching nature and freshness. In fact, I have been always doing the "theme download" jobs from various websites for my blogs. But, if you really want a special type of wordpress theme then you have to buy it from the author. But the persons who are not able to do so then they can get it free from the internet.

Yeah! I know, there are many websites on the internet having free wordpress themes. But while surfing for the same job I come across one website named "WPThemesPlugin.com". This website brings up various types of wordpress themes. I would like to add one more important point here is, this website offers an attractive packages especially for you at affordable price. For example, the author of this website offers a $99.99 annual package for individuals who think to use the themes on a single website. In fact, this is the full version and it includes all scripts, theme files, and images. Also, this package offers you free theme upgrades when new versions of Wordpress are released. It means, you need not worry even when Wordpress updates the code base. After expiry of this package, you will be notified via email. Here it is up to you that you can either continue or cancel registration after one year.

I think it is better to visit this website and see the greatest creations of wordpress themes placed here that can be useful to everyone for their individual or commercial means.

The Hills of Lansdowne : A Honeymoon Resort - 1

The faithful make their way up the foothills to the source of the mightiest rivers, along the highest mountain passes to sacred ground near the roof of the world. This is the abode of India’s Gods.
Lansdowne lies in the state of Uttaranchal. It is located in Pauri Garhwal at 5,597 ft. 40 km from Kotdwar and 233 km NE of Delhi.

Tiny Lansdowne is one of the quietest hill stations in India. So quiet and so hidden that you know you have reached only when you actually turn past the gates of the elegant Garhwal Rifles Cantonment. And the town is as picturesque as you were led to hope for by the drive up the road from Kotdwar – past a mountain stream (the ‘lost’ river khoh) so clear you can see the pebbles on its bed from your bus window – far up the mountainside.

Back in the Raj, Lansdowne was one of the popular hill stations where the Sahibs, mostly from the Army, galloped across the ridge that overlooked a sprawling valley and the Greatest Himalaya, or drove to the church on the hill (the popular Tiffin Top) every Sunday in their horse-drawn carriages. The town itself is named after Sir Henry Charles Keith Pretty Fitzmaurice, 5th Marques of Lansdowne, 6th Earl of Kerry and Viceroy of India from 1888 to 1894. Shaded, winding roads are still lined with colonial bungalows, some in a state of disrepair, some steadfastly retaining their charm with ornate gates and windowsills hidden behind blanketing bougainvillea.
