The curving mountain roads can twist up your insides - look straight if you're a passenger and pass the lemon wedges around! Your holiday begins when you see the shimmering waters of this lake waiting to be explored by land, 'sea' and air.

Nature walks
One of Kumaon's grand theatres of nature, Naukuchiatal is where an opera of butterflies, Himalayan birds, animals and flowers play out the 'four seasons' without any help from Vivaldi. With Byzantine nature walks and trails, boating and fish to angle into, where do you begin? Stroll around the periphery of the lake. This leafy 3 1/2 -km nature walk takes you along a secluded path, scented with blossoms.

A huge statue of Hanuman, within the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, is right at the entrance to Naukuchiatal. Give thanks for your vacation or simply pay your respects after stooping through an artificial 'cave'.

In and around the tal
Spend an enjoyable half-an-hour in the morning taking in the views of birds in striking shades of red, blue and green. You'll be sorry if you don't carry along binoculars. By the time you have had your fill, you will have digested your breakfast, which means it's time to swim. Naukuchiatal is pretty deep and a fantastic arena for showing off your prowess in the water. Bi. remember, these Kumaoni tals have be, littered with pebbles. If you are used to the smoothness of a tiled pool or sandy seabed, this can prove disquieting. Carry along an old pair of sandals and keep the, strapped on while you swim if you don want your tender feet getting poked.

Naukuchiatal does not have wide bank, on which you can spread out a picnic, be there is a good spot, down the lane from Deja Vu where the road curves around the tal towards the Lake Resort, which can accommodate a rug for a small group . Those who do not want to swim, or make the acquaintance of the cows who come to this clearing for a mid-morning sip, can carry along a book or make sandwiches for those who are in the water.

Do not swim too far out because the tal is full of pedal- and row-boats being manned by tourists, who are not expert. They may not be able to steer away from you in time or, worse, may panic and head straight for your bobbing head. Stay close to the water's edge, where you can float lazily under branches that hang over the water, and enjoy extra special views of birds and their nests.

Boats are available in all shapes and gaudy colours. Cross over to the jetty on the southern side of the tal, next to the village school. Negotiate with the boatmen, who can take you out or let you row yourself. Charges range between Rs 60 and 200, depending on your bargaining skills. If you feel like you need something to go with the chips, how about fishing? Give your partner something to 'carp' about by dropping a line for this freshwater fish.

Adventure options
Drive up to Pandegaon to paraglide over Naukuchiatal. Be there by 10.30 am: flights are available on a first-come-first-served basis, and the season begins in March. Warning As 'fun' as it may seem - and indeed the sight of the occasional phugawalla soaring over the lake is inviting - this is an adventure sport. Take a long hard look at the equipment and the company before you decide to take a flight. When attempted by us, motorcycle helmets were provided. Carry your own safety helmets if you have them. People have turned their ankles or hurt their backs while landing. If you do not feel confident, do not hesitate to cancel your ride.

Shopping
If you prefer getting into a jam, there an plenty of orchards studded with apples peaches, plums, lemons and avocados Buy a bag full of fruit from the stalls at Bhimtal for home and your friends. Drop in at the Fruitage outlet (on the Bhowali Bhimtal Road, 8 km from Naukuchiatal) for jams, chutneys, pickles and honey. Particularly recommended is the huransh (rhododendron) squash, apple chutney and jam and the lychee and bel squash.

Just 2 km from the Lake Resort at Triveni House is AEPAN (Action for Environment and the Preservation of Art and Nature), which showcases the ritual arts of Uttaranchal on objects of daily use such as trays, mugs and T-shirts.

Bhimtal
This is the lake you drive past to get to Naukuchiatal. One of the largest lakes in Kumaon, Bhimtal has legendary associations with Bhima of the Mahabharata. A most unattractive restaurant at the centre of the tal nevertheless offers panoramic views. Stop off at the Kumaon Umang Mahila Samiti outlet on the Ranibagh Road for woollens and homemade pickle. There is also the privately owned Folk Culture Museum at Mehragaon on the Bhowali Road. Curated by Dr Yashodhar Matpal, it has an interesting collection of rock art. Go sailing in the tal or explore the forests and orchards.

Things to see and do at Harsil - 2

Harsil is thus far untouched by tourism, because the majority of travellers move on to Gangotri. There are plenty of good walks in this area along the river and into the surrounding forests. Two kilometres from Harsil is Dharali Village, from where a 7-km trek brings you to Sattal, a group of seven lakes, set amidst beautiful surroundings and an excellent camping site. People can also explore the large Tibetan settlement at Bhagori and Harsil.

Gangotri (24 km)

The road, carrying on from Harsil, enters the dense green gorge of Bhairon Ghati. After crossing the Jadh Ganga River beyond Lanka, the road winds its way to a halt at Gangotri, which is a small pilgrim town based around the confluence of the rivers Bhagirathi and Kedar Ganga at an altitude of 10,000 ft. All along this route you are surrounded by dense green pine forests with wonderful views of the snow mountains around. A temple dedicated to Ganga was built here by Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century.

Gangotri has an awesome natural setting and is the starting point of quite a few treks in the area. The two most popular ones in the region are the Gangotri-Gaumukh-Tapovan route which carries on towards Badrinath and the Gangotri-Kedartal trek along the Kedar Ganga Valley. People wanting to stay at Gangotri itself can chill out at Gaurikund, a waterfall on the Bhagirathi River.

The gates of the Gangotri Temple are closed on Diwali and are opened again after six months in May. During this time, the idol of the goddess resides at Mukhba Village, near Harsil.

Gangotri has no big hotels but there are many lodges, including the the GMVN Travellers Lodge (Tel:013772-22221; Tariff:Rs. 380-950) open from April 1 to October 31 and Forest Rest House (Uttarkashi Tel: 01374-222444; Tariff: Rs 100-300). Food is available at numerous cafes along the main Gangotri street.

Gaumukh (21 km from Gangotri)
Gaumukh, source of the Bhagirathi River, is at an altitude of 12,769 ft. After passing the main temple in Gangotri, one emerges into a small clearing where steps connect you to the main trail to Gaumukh. The path, all along the Bhagirathi to the true right of the valley, is a gradual ascent and one soon leaves the tree line behind. Chirbasa (9 km from Gangotri), situated amidst the last clump of trees, is nothing more than a few scattered shacks set up to serve the hundreds of pilgrims who visit Gaumukh every day in the season.

Along most of the route there's a stark, dry quality to the landscape, accompanied by close views of peaks going up to 19,685 ft. The peaks remain in sight throughout the trek. Near Chirbasa, the Bhagirathi Valley swings to the right, opening up a grand view of the peaks and Bhagirathi I, II and III at the head of the valley. Also seen are Bhrigu Parvat and the Manda group.

Bhojbasa (12,467 ft), providing the only solidly constructed accommodation on the route, is a further 8 km from Chirbasa. Four km ahead of Bhojbasa is Gaumukh, where the Bhagirathi emerges from the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. Leading up to Gaumukh, the path forks with the lower path going towards the glacier and the higher towards Tapovan. Approaching the glacier, one gets fine views of Mount Shivaling (21,456 ft).

Most people prefer to stay at Lal Baba's Ashram or the rest house at Bhojbasa. There is a canteen here, besides countless other cafes which also serve food. Most of these cafes at Bhojbasa and Chirbasa charge approx Rs 100 per night.

Tapovan (6 km from Gaumukh)
Although Shivaling Peak can be seen from all around Gaumukh, its footprint lies at Tapovan (14,632 ft), a beautiful high-altitude meadow above Gaumukh. The route from Gaumukh involves a lateral traverse of the Gangotri Glacier, moving from the true right to the true left of the valley. Following this a short but steep and strenuous ascent leads you across a dip in the ridge above (marked by a flag), and into the glorious meadow of Tapovan.

Pahari Wilson rides again
A legend prevails in the mountain villages of a holy trail in the Garhwal Hills, that the restless ghost of an angrez raja rides his horse across the rocky trails on moonlit nights. The ancient Ganga weeps in sympathy at Harsil as she listens to the retreating hoof beats swing by the dilapidated bungalow on the road to Gangotri. It was here that Pahari Wilson, or Raja Wilson as he was referred to, settled down with Gulabi, a local girl. Mystery still shrouds F.E. Wilson's origins. Some believe that he came from Lancashire others say that he left the British army in disgrace and found refuge in this far corner of Garhwal.

In time, Wilson's entrepreneurial spirit endeared him to the local Garhwalis. But when Wilson built the suspension bridge at the Bhairon Ghati Gorge over the Jadh Ganga, the locals were too petrified to venture onto it. Leaping on to his Arab, Wilson galloped up and down the bridge to allay their fears. Even today on a full moon night the locals believe that Raja Wilson rides again.

The Padmini Niwas Hotel provides excellent Gujarati meals, vegetarian , of course. Green in Kulri Bazaar is another old vegetarian restaurant, always crowded. Good South Indian food can also be found in Landour Bazaar. Near the Clock Tower, the little Golden Restaurant caters to different tastes. Whispering Windows (Tel: 2632020) in Library Bazaar is still popular. Kwality (Tel: 2632117), above the old Rialto Cinema, continues to be a favourite perch for people-watching.

Guys, just fasten your seat belts, and enjoy the 34-km drive up the steep, winding road from Dehra, with its innumerable hairpin bends.

For your time in Mussoorie begins now as you leave Dehra Dun to begin the uphill climb. Enjoy the changing scenery and the sudden drop in temperature as you approach the hill station.

The first (and the best) view of Mussoorie comes up as you take the bend before Bhatta Village. Quite suddenly you see the 'great ramp of Mussoorie' (as Kipling called it in Kim), in all its panoramic splendour. Half an hour later you are in the hill station.

The Mall Mussoorie's promenade, the Mall, has tremendous length but not much width. It straddles a precipitous ridge, extending from Cloud's End in the west to Rockville (the 'Haunted House') in the east. Officially, the Mall begins at Library Bazaar and ends at the Clock Tower, where Landour Bazaar starts. You can walk this distance in an hour.

Towards the end of Landour Bazaar, you enter the cantonment, which has an old-world atmosphere of its own. West of Library Bazaar lies Happy Valley, so named for no discernible reason: it covers a rather melancholy stretch that includes the municipal gardens, the Tibetan School and Home, and the National Academy of Administration. South of the Picture Palace, a steep road takes you down to Barlowganj, where old schools such as St. George's, Oakgrove and Wynberg-Allen occupy spacious estates. You can drive to most of these areas, but if you feel like a good walk, there are a few to be had around Mussoorie.

Kempty Falls:

Though it's a short visit to Mussoorie, include an excursion to Kempty Falls, just an hour's drive (12 km) away on the Mussoorie-Yamunotri route. This used to be a lovely spot, but it has become one long, rather scruffy bazaar, ugly with plastic bags and other litter. It's a real tourist trap in May and June, and traffic snarls can take the fun out of the outing and the beauty out of the falls. Better to carry on down to the Yamuna River and find a quiet spot to picnic along the river bank.

Mussoorie : Lording it over the plains - 1

Mussoorie lying in the state of Uttaranchal. It located in the Garhwal Hills at 6,578 ft, on a ridge 34 km N of Dehra Dun and 269 km N of Delhi Route from Delhi NH58 to Roorkee via Meerut and Muzaffarnagar; NH72A to Dehra Dun via Chhutmalpur and Mohand; state highway to Mussoorie.

Once called the Queen of the Hills, the old lady has lost some of her lustre, and her crown is slightly dented. But she is still worth a visit - ideal for a weekend away from the smog of Delhi.

Visitors will find that the air is still pure and invigorating, the mountains majestic, and the plains below, green and verdant to the laded eye.

When the British left India in 1947, Mussoorie went through a slump. But the 1980s then saw an emerging Indian middle class that took to hill stations just as the British did in the Raj days. They may not come for long vacations but they are there all the same for that much-needed weekend break.

They promenade along he Mall, relax in their hotels, drive out to Dhanaulti or walk or drive down to the Kempty Falls. Families get themselves photographed in a variety of costumes, children visit ice-cream parlours or video game shops, and honeymooners amble down Camel's Back Road.

Located 3,500 ft above sea level, the camp offers a range of activities, Including rock-climbing, rappelling, river-crossing, still-water kayaking, waterfall treks, swimming in the river, nature walks and birdwatching. Kids too can participate.

Situated at the confluence of the Lunagad Creek and the Tonsthe, Aquaterra Adventurers Camp (Delhi Tel: 9811103831; Tariff. Rs. 900) offers tents and a warm central dining area to cater to all your requirements. Each tent has two beds (a third bed can be accommodated fora small child), a bedside table, two chairs and a small patio - more space than you imagined a tent could hold.

The camp is located 3,500 ft above sea level, in the midst of thick pine forests. Activities at Aquaterra include river-rafting, rock-climbing, rappelling, nature and village walks, midnight rambles and team-building exercises.
