Things to do and see at Shimala - 4

Prospect and Summer hills:

A 15-minute climb from Boileauganj leads up to the temple of Kamna Devi at the summit of Prospect Hill, Shimla's western most. "fake longer if you like, pausing to take in the views of the countryside.

Summer Hill, on which sits the sprawling campus of Himachal Pradesh University, is next to and to the northeast of Prospect. Near the university stands an old and magnificent mansion, Manorville, in which Mahatma Gandhi once staved. Formerly the house of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, today the mansion is the Shimla guest house of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

It was from here that Gandhi, along with Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad and other freedom fighters, set out to meet Viceroy Lord Wavell in June 1945 for discussions about India's independence.

Things to see and do at Shimla - 3

Lords Auckland, Dufferin, Kitchener, Wavell, and Curzon all left their mark in the town, and many of the Elizabethan and I dwardian edifices they built still stand, spread across the seven hills of Shimk'. We'll take you on a walking tour to all the sights across the hills.

Walking tours:

Shimla is built on a central ridge, around which seven peaks jut out into the sky. The original village of Shimla first sprang up on the flat ridge and developed vertically, settlements moving upwards as each new viceroy took over from his predecessor.

Depending on how much time and energy you have at your disposal, choose a hill for what interests you.

Shimla : The Allure Of An Aging Queen - 2

I don't wish to comment here, on which of the two regimes is responsible for the decline of this once "most fashionable summer resort" in all of India. What we do know, as any Himachali will tell you, is that, unable to reinvent herself, Shimla just isn't what she used to be. So, today, to appreciate the Shimla expenence, we have to go into her past, sidestepping the present.

And indeed there is much to appreciate. For all the cracks on her facade, there is no denying the charm of this queen among hill stations. You can still count on gorgeous Himalayan views and make excursions to the countryside around. So ignore the fraying edges and make your way up here. The salubrious air and scenic views act as a balm, helping you ignore the scars of modernity as you succumb to the charisma of Shimla's enduring past.

Shimla : The Allure Of An Aging Queen - 1

Shimla belongs to the State Himachal Pradesh. It is located in the seven picturesque hills of Shimla are in southern Himachal Pradesh, 347 km N of Delhi Route from Delhi NH1 to Ambala via Panipat and Karnal; NH22 to Shimla via Zirakpur (bypassing Chandigarh), Panchkula, Kalka and Shoghi.

Shimla owes its character almost wholly to the British, who turned this stopover on the way to the temple of hill goddess Shamla into the summer capital of a subcontinent. The rest of its make-up is courtesy the governments of independent India. From part-time capital of India to full time capital of a state, Shimla took it all in her stride, but the strain has begun to show. Many a tear was shed for their beloved Shimla when the colonisers had to leave. Even today, just a mention of their summer capital and the British stiff upper lip quivers in sorrow at the thought of what their paradise has become. But that's too bad, considering they were never meant to have been here in the first place.

Where to Stay and Eat at Jilling - 5

If you are in filling, you are there as a guest of the Lail family - Steve, his wife Parvati, and their daughter Nandini; there is no other place to stay. Jilling Estate (Tel: 05942-246186, 09412383348; Tariff: Rs. 1,500-2,200) offers simple but comfortable accommodation. The underlying philosophy is that if you are in a place like this, you ought to be outdoors for much of the day, getting in lungfuls of air, having your pores opened up, getting a tan from walking in the sun; but when you are weary after a day-long trek, you should have a comfortable cottage to retire to.

Four cottages, each with an attached kitchenette and sleep-in facilities for a domestic help are dispersed at discreet distances and varying altitudes over the estate. Some of these cottages date back to the colonial era, when the estate was owned by the Stiffies, a British family with substantial interests in the hotel and confectionery business in Lahore, Dalhousie and Mussoorie.

Jilling Estate takes in guests even if they do not have bookings, but that's a little chancy, given that there are only four cottages on offer. It's best to book in advance, particularly between March and June.

Since a visit to Jilling Estate works largely like home-stay accommodation, you wll be eating in most of the time. In any case, there are no established restaurants in the neighbourhood (remember the 2-km walk down?). Every cottage has a kitchenette, and the caretaker rustles up tasty, earthy 'home food'. Breakfast: Toast, egg, fresh honey and fresh fruits or parathas, egg, curd, pickle and fruit; Lunch and dinner: North Indian and Kumaoni preparations. On occasion, you may be invited to the Lalls' cottage for dinner around a bon fire: Steve's daughter Nandini prepares tasty bakes. The evening will typically end with a rendition of Kumaoni folk songs.

Things to see and do at Jilling - 4

You can take an enjoyable moments while birdwatching at Jilling .

Birdwatching:

There are over 110 known Lower-Himalayan bird species, including some endangered species like the cheer pheasant, in Jilling and, wherever you are on the estate, you'll never be far from birdsong.

(Often, given the air of serenity that reigns over the estate, it may be the only sounds you will hear all day.) From March onwards, filling also comes alive with countless species of butterflies - you could go to sleep on a daisy meadow and wake up to the flapping of butterfly wings.

Wildlife:

Almost everyone in the hills has a story to tell about sighting a leopard or a black bear; not all of them are pleasant encounters. But a visitor who spends no more than a few days must get incredibly lucky to sight some big game, even from afar.

Rather more easy to spot are wild boar, sambhar, barking deer and mountain goats. Steve has a powerful beacon light which, when flashed on the hillsides may show up a scurry of nocturnal animals.

Treks:

Jilling Estate organises more rigorous treks to Milam Glacier, Pindari Glacier and Panchchuli. These 5 to 15-day treks to about 15,000-16,000 ft, complete with tents and porters and guides, are typically organised in September-October, after the monsoons, when the landscape turns indescribably green. The campsites are in scenic locations, far away from regular rest houses. And, Steve Lail is something of a motorbike freak, and occasionally organises mobike trips to Kumaon, Garhwal and Nepal. Fees vary with treks and size of groups: for details, check with the estate.

What is in it for kids:

That rather depends on the children. If they are socially challenged TV addicts, they are in for a huge disappointment: the cottages don't have TVs (or phones). But if they are keen to be outdoors and are game for walks, they can reclaim their childhood eating fresh fruits right off the trees, going bird- or game-watching, pitching tents and setting up camp, and in every other way marvelling at the wonders of Nature. There are instances of two year olds going on the Milam Glacier trek. In other words, with the right attitude, anything is possible.

Kitchen Without Undermount Stainless Steel Sinks? Not Possible!

The place I like best in this world is the kitchen. No matter where it is, no matter what kind, if it is a kitchen, if it's a place where we make food, it's fine with me. Ideally it should be well broken in. Lots of tea towels, dry and faultless. White tile catching the light. Oh! What it is! Yes! It's everyone's dream about their kitchen and many of us get in real life. The main function of a kitchen is cooking or preparing food but it may also be used for dining and entertaining.

Women, from all over the world spends a good part of her time in the kitchen, doing the thankless job of cooking. So, it is necessary to have a modular kitchen which expresses aesthetics, class and convenience to woman. As a part of interior decoration we people spend too much on the kitchen accessories to get a relief for our beloved better half. But we never concentrate on the issues that pertaining or leads to open difficulties with existing sinks. It happens everywhere because we never wish to spend the money on quality resulting the person who are taking care of your kitchen gets disturbed. Yeah! Here I am focusing the issue of sinks which are a vital part of kitchen and that gets pleasure feelings after lunch and dinner everyday.

In fact, when you project your dream house it would mean having everything according to what you have planned for your home. Kitchens are as important as any other section of your home. Things to see and do at Jilling - 3

In Jilling, leisure expands to fill the time 'allotted' to it. City slickers who live a frenetic life may find that time hangs heavily on their hands here - but that is only if they have not opened up their minds to the limitless possibilities of the great wide open spaces. If you are the outdoor kind, you will likely find 24 hours a day is not quite enough to do the things you want to do.

Walks:

Explore the many walking trails through the forests to the surrounding villages, and interact with the villagers - you will gain interesting insights into the way of life in the hills, Kumaoni shamanistic rituals and much else. Jilling Estate provides a day guide for free; if you find the gradient a strain, you could hire a pony for the day. The forests are dense, natural formations of oak, chestnut, deodar and pine, with an interspersing of rhododendrons, a thick undergrowth of ferns - and several gurgling jungle streams. There are also plum, apple and apricot orchards, which yield fruit in April-May. It is perfectly okay to pluck them right off the tree and wolf them down.

Camping:

Pitch tent anywhere in the forest that the guide thinks is safe - or on the ridge (7,200 ft) that overlooks the valley. The estate provides tents and other camp facilities - but only on condition that you would not disturb the animals and birds and are careful not to set off forest fires. Spend a night on the ridge under a canopy of millions of stars, and you could catch an early morning glimpse of barking deer or mountain goat on the craggy slopes.

Jilling : The Pathway to Heaven - 2

In the next two days and a bit that I was in Jilling, I did much else that nourished my soul, but I did not take him up on that offer - or was it a dare? Perhaps I wear my inhibitions like a suit of armour for fear of unleashing some deep-seated primal instincts. Perhaps I am just a prig.

But the invitation to take a walk on the wild side couldn't have been extended in a more appropriate environment: Jilling Estate, spread over 50-plus acres of mixed deciduous forest, is of course no nudist camp, but it's the nearest thing to an idyllic Garden of Eden. And its owner, a "practical environmentalist and nature-friendly holiday facilitator", has sworn to protect its virginal beauty and purity, to the point of not allowing the local panchayat to build a road up to the estate.

Which is why visitors to Jilling must walk (or hire a pony or a palki for) the last couple of kilometres uphill from Matial.

It is a gentle, hour-long climb, past oak and pine forests and bright-red rhododendron blossoms and armies of plum, peach and apricot trees. But the absence of a macadamised roadway right to the top ensures that only the reasonably fit and the very ardent nature-lovers make the effort to come.

Which, to me, is as it should be. For Jilling is not a run-of-the-mill 'tourist' resort to which anyone who coughs up the admittance fee may demand entry: it is a cultural experience, a way of life, an invitation to sit at the high table of Nature's golden party. Treat it like a badge of honour that must be earned.
