मित्रांनो,

लवकरच नवरात्रीचे पर्व सुरु होत आहे. आपणा सर्वांना नवरात्रोत्सवाच्या मन:पुर्वक शुभेच्छा. आज संध्याकाळी मी, माझी फॅमिली आणि माझा मित्र गिरीश पालेकर फॅमिलीसह श्री शांतादुर्गादेवी, कवळे (Shree Shantadurgadevi, Kavlem, Goa) आणि श्री शांतादुर्गा देवी कुंकळळीकरीण, फातर्पा या ठिकाणी दर्शनाचा योग आला.

गोव्यातील सर्व भक्तजनांना नवरात्रीच्या निमित्ताने सहज दर्शनाचा योग आलेला आहे. आम्ही संध्याकाळी श्री शांतादुर्गादेवी, कवळे साठी दर्शनाला निघालो. होय! रस्ता चुकत चुकत गेलो पण शेवटी इच्छित स्थळी जाऊन पोहोचलोत.

फोंडा तालुक्यातील कवळे येथील श्री शांतादुर्गा देवीचे मंदिर भव्य असून मंदिराची शैली चित्तवेधक आहे. या मंदिराच्या शिख़रावरील मनोरा अष्टकोनी असून बराच उंच आहे. त्यावर गोलाकार घुड आहे. या शिखरासारखे दुसरे शिखर गोव्यात इतर कोणत्याच ठिकाणी आढळत नाही. कवळेच्या मंदिरासमोर एक प्रचंड दीपस्तंभ आहे. त्याच्यामागे एक मोठा तलावदेखिल आहे. या देवीने शिव आणि विष्णू यांच्यामधे निर्माण झालेल्या वादाचे निवारण केले होते, म्हणून या देवीला श्री शांतादुर्गा असे संबोधण्यात आले, असे सांगतात. सध्या मंदिरात असलेली या देवीची मूळ मूर्ती धातुची असून ती समभंग मुद्रेत आहे. सन १८९८ मधे श्री शांतादुर्गेची मूळ मूर्ती पठाणांनी चोरून नेली. नवीन मूर्ती स्थापित करेपर्यंत मंदिराशेजारी असलेल्या गौडपादाचार्य मठातील देवीची मूर्ती या मंदिरात आणून स्थापन करण्यात आली.

१९ मार्च १९०२ साली नवीन मूर्तीची स्थापना करण्यात आली. मठातून आणलेली ती मूर्ती त्याच गर्भग्रृहात ठेवण्यात आली आहे. देवी मूळ सासष्टी तालुक्यातील केळशी किंवा केळोशी गावची १५६० सालच्या पोर्तुगिजांच्या र्धमछळामुळे देवीला फोंडा तालुक्यातील सध्याच्या कवळे गावात आणली. आजदेखिल सासष्टिच्या केळशी गावात या देवीचे प्राचीन स्थळ आहे.

कवळेचे सध्याचे मंदिर नेमके कधी बांधले, याची नोंद आढळत नाही; पण १८ व्या शतकातसुध्दा या मंदिराची वास्तु उभी असल्याचे पुरावे आढळतात. १७६० साली हे देवालय नरोराम नावाच्या मंत्र्याने बांधून दिले. ते साता-याच्या छत्रपती शाहू महाराजांच्या दरबारात मंत्रिपद सांभाळत होते. नरोराम यांचे मूळ नाव नरोराम शेणवी. ते वेंगुर्ल्यानजीक असलेल्या कोचरे गावचे. आजदेखिल त्यांचा एखादा वंशज देवीच्या भेटीस आला तर त्याला मोठ्या मानाने देवालयात आणण्याचा परिपाठ आहे.

On the Holy Hill where now stands the Tower of St. Augustine. The New College of St. Paul or of St. Rock, the second institution of the Jesuits (1580) - the two stones marking the site have now disappeared when Navelkar's Complex was built.

The Augustinian College and Church of Our Lady of Populo (1633) and Church of Our Lady of Grace (Graca-1602) now all in ruins, except the Tower to the North.

On the outerio de Sto Amaro (Hill of St. Amaro) - somewhere in the direction of the old St. Paul's College there stood the :

01. Paroquial Church of St. Alex (1597-1610), near the Convent of the Carmelites which no longer exists.

02. Convent and Church of the Carmelites (1621) which has disappeared now - only the altar stands there surrounded by bushes, etc.

03. Collegiate of Our Lady of Light (before 1541) on the "Monte de Boa Vista" to the South of the City (Cfr. The Miraculous Cross).

At Dauji, East of the City - along the river Mandovi:

01. There existed the Convent and the Church of Mother of God (1567);

02. The Paroquial Church of Santa Lucia (before 1541);

03. The Paroquial Church of St. Joseph

All these three institutions are not there any more....so stay tuned with Old City - Goa

Goa : The Old City - I

All you welcome to the Old City of Goa. Once it called Rome of the East because of the large number of Churches and Convents that existed there. It was the Capital of the Portuguese Empire and Centre of Christianity in the East; now only 13 Churches and chapels are standing whose historical sketches I am elaborating here with.

There were many places of St. Thomas, The Apostle (1560), in the direction of the East, after the old college of Saint Paul's College.

The Church of St. Lazarus (1530-31) with the Chapel of St. Louis, King of France, towards the Eastern boundary of the City.

The Convent and Church of St. Dominic (1950), in the direction of the East, near the Southern banks of River, Mandovi or Manddvi.
