We soaked in the warm hospitality and the cool mountain climate. Mornings at the cottage were spent in an almost meditative state watching layers of clouds play hide-and-seek with the peaks. The Chapel of St. Catherine Goa

In front of the Church of Holy Spirit (commonly known a s the church of St. Francis of Assisi), there is a narrow steep which leads to the chapel of St. Catherine of Alexandria (Egypt). The spot marks the venue of the battle that took place between the Portuguese and the Mohamadans when the Muslim City of Goa was conquered by Alfonso De Albuquerque, on 25th November 1510.

The chapel seems to have been subsequently rebuilt for the third time, when the slab which was over the door of the chapel was removed and fixed in the wall near the side door facing the East. The slab had tile legend of Governor Alfonso de Albuquerque entering the city and conquering it from the Moors in 1510. The legend can be still read in Portuguese.

The Chapel, though small in size, stands out as an historical monument erected in 1510, on the site where formerly stood the gate through which the Portuguese entered the Muslim City. The Governer, George Cabral (1549-51) had it enlarged in 1550. The feast of St. Catherine was celebrated in this chapel every year with solemnity on 25th November. A solemn procession from the Cathedral went to the Chapel in which, all dignitaries, civil and ecclesiastical took part.

If you are on the trip of Goa then do not miss to see The Cathedral. Yeah! It's Sé Cathedral of Santa Catarina, Goa Velha. The original building erected in 1510 was enlarged in 1511-12. It was a mud-structure covered with straw. It had only one altar and on it was installed the picture of St. Catherine of Alexandria for it was dedicated to that Saint on whose feast day 25th November 1510 - according to the Old Liturgical Calendar, the City of Goa was conquered by Affonso De Albuquerque from the muslims.

The cathedral has now only one tower on the Southern side; on it there are five bells; the bigger one is called the "Golden Bell", cast in the foundery of the Arsenal in 1652, in the City of Goa itself. It's called "Golden" because it is believed that some gold was mixed when making the bell to produce better sound. The Northern tower came down on 25th July 1775 may be because of the fury of the monsoons; the tower was not plastered for nearly 100 years.

Araku Valley - Culture and Shopping

The Tribal Museum has 3-D installations of village-life scenes along with other artifacts. Village women from Chompi perform the Dhimsa dance at Punnami Yatri Nivas almost every day. It is open for everybody. You could also visit a nearby village. Chompi would be the easiest. Ask the Punnami desk to put you in touch with Sarpanch Naidu for visits, or even a stay over. The best place to pick up souvenirs which have more honest prices than the Tribal Museum Shop. It is also possible to buy directly from the craftsmen. Mushiriguda Village (10 km) is known for bamboo products, Chompi (5 km) for lac and Madaguda (8 km) for pottery. ‘Pure’ honey is also available but one place you will get what you pay for is ASSAV.

Things to see and do at Araku Valley

The journey is a bit of a teaser and it seems natural to expect long mountain parts disappearing around unknown curves. One forgets this is a valley and the hills are not as near as they look. Araku is a village with most of the amenities of a town without the accompanying mess. Taxis can be hired at fixed rates, but drivers will demand more. Autos are available at half the price.

Waterfalls:

There are many waterfalls near Araku but Nappurai, or Chapparai (14 km), heads the list both for proximity and fun. Smooth, slanting rocks interrupt a stream, making a huge natural water slide. It would be difficult to get kids out soon enough, so carry food along. When you get to Anantagiri, take the right turn close to the State Electricity Board. Duduma Falls (82 km), the site of the Machkund Power Project, is the biggest spectacle. On the Orissa border, two huge waterfalls cascade down from over 2000 ft, each supposedly falling into a different state. The latter part of the 2.5 hr drive is especially lovely. Once you get to Machkund, take permission from the office of the Joint Electrical Officer, open everyday. The taxi from Araku and back will cost Rs. 1,500 approx. Also check out Thadiguda Falls.

Borra Caves and Padampuram Gardens

Borra caves (35 km) have been around for a million years. Then 200 years ago an Englishman came by and announced he had discovered them. The tribals here say the credit belongs not to William Hunter but to one of their cows that fell into the caves through a hole (borra in adivasi Telugu). The caves are huge, but the stalactite and stalagmite formations inside are minor. The round trip costs Rs. 500-600 by taxi.

Padampuram Gardens were initially the kitchen gardens for the British military camp in Vizag during World War II. Now a horticulture society, it is also the chief attraction for children here.
