The Government Museum, Salem - 122

Valuable collection of terracotta and sculptures are featured in this museum.

The Salem Government Museum was formed by the District Collector with the support of the Local Artist Group called Contemporary Writers and Painters Association. The Museum was opened to the public in the year 1976.

The Government Museum, Padukkottai - 121

Pudukkottai - is one of the new districts formed after the 1971 census, on 14th January, 1974. It is one of the small districts of Tamil Nadu with an area of 4661 sq.Kms. This district is bordered by Tiruchirappalli in the north, Thanjavur in the north-east, Bay of Bengal in the east and Ramanthapuram in the south. It has a coastline of about 39 Kms.

The rare collections in the sections of Geology, Zoology, Paintings, Anthropology, Epigraphy and Historical Records etc. are very interesting and informative. The beautiful sculptures and bronzes of various periods are attractive items of this museum. Sittannavasal : This ancient abode of Jains dating back to the 2nd century B.C. is about 16 kms. from Pudukkottai. The rock-cut cave temple with its beautiful frescoes and paintings in natural colours as in Ajantha in Maharashtra and stonebeds known as Eladipattam, a cave in which the Jain monks were said to have sought refuge in those days are the main attractions.

There are a few sculptures of Jain Thirthankaras in the Ardhamandapam and the inner shrine of the cave temple. the ceiling of the Ardhamandapam contains fresco paintings of the 7th century A.D. Inscriptions of the 9th-10th century A.D. are also found in the cave. The cave temple is said to have been excavated in the 7th century A.D. by the Pallava King Mahendravarman.

You can visit here from 10.00 am to 01.00 pm and 02.00 pm to 05.00 pm except Fridays, Second Saturdays and Public Holidays. Here, no entry fees has been charged to visit this place.

Pondicherry Museum - 120

A collection of findings from Arikamadu, bronzes of the Chola period, armoury, coins and handicrafts are featured in this museum.

Guys, the Pondicherry museum housing some of the brilliant collections of sculpture is settled in the Bharathi Park. This museum has an excellent gallery with sculptures and has the remains of archaeological findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement. One can go through the history and legendary French colonial details in the section of the museum.

There is also a very good collection of snail shells brought from the Pondicherry region. Bronze sculptures of god and goddess, a wide gathering of temple lamps, handicrafts and art are also here. Some specimens of Chola and Pallava art from Pondicherry and Karaikal are displayed in the sculpture gallery.
