Contacting the Chhaptrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya (The Prince of Wales Museum) is the Hornbill House, the headquarters of the Bombay Natural History Society. It is an institution of a different kind where collectors have been presenting their prize examples of animals and birds for over a century.
The Bombay Natural History Society is today the biggest non-government organisation (NGO) in the Indian landmass booked in nature conservation research. In the 120 years of its creation, its dedication has been, and continues to be, the conservation of India's natural wealth, protection of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources for a balanced and healthy development for future contemporarieses. The Society's guiding principle has always been that conservation must be based on scientific research - a tradition exemplified by its late president, Dr. Sálim Ali.
Here, eveyone can see replications and rarified specimens of vertebrates, insects, beetles, butterflies and embalmed reptiles. A temporary membership of the society is available, which changes one to know more about society's activities in the sphere of nature conservation. With this, one can even access the library and attend the weekly lectures. Bombay Natural History Society is not open to public, so interested ones are required to take prior permission for admission.
