I know, all you guys never know what is around the Kausani. If you are missed to read this article then there is no use to visit here. Just keep remember the distance and beautiful locations around the Kausani.

Baijnath (16 km):

A little lower than Kausani, Baijnath is a one-horse town on the banks of the Gomti, in the Garuda Valley. The main attraction here is the temple complex. Pick up a large packet of channa to feed the fish near the temple and do not get tempted by their size - fishing is strictly forbidden.

Also look out for the large round stone which nine men should lift using only a finger each, just outside the compound. The black stone idol of Parvati in the main temple is exquisitely worked and worth spending time over. Eight km from there is a Kali Temple, known as Kot-ki-mai.

Rail Nearest railhead: Kathgodam (138 km/ 41/2 hrs). Taxi Costs Rs 1,200-1,400 Road From Delhi, drive along NH24 to Rampur and NH87 till Bhowali, then bear right towards Khairna and on to Almora. Kausani is 50 km north of Almora via Kosi and Someshwar.

Stay in Baijnath at the KMVN Tourist Rest House (Tel: 05963-250101; Tariff: Rs. 200-300, dorm Rs 50 per bed).

Bageshwar (39 km):

Bageshwar is located at the confluence of the Gomti and Saryu rivers at 3,200 ft. The temple complex is one of the main tourist draws. The temple is strung with bells - traditional Kumaoni offerings. They come truly alive during the Uttarayani Mela in January every year. So, what you think? Just reach at Bageshwar and Baijnath to pray for future.

Where to stay and eat at Binsar - 4

There are only three places to stay at in Binsar proper. What's great about Binsar is that since it's not teeming with resorts, it has less potential to get crowded. However it does tend to get noisy during the high season. Almora also offers good options.

The Mountain Resort, Khali Estate (Tel: 05962-251011; Tariff: Rs 1,575) is undoubtedly the most charming place to stay at in Binsar. Set among beautiful succulents blooming in wide, open grounds, the stone cottages look truly as if they were plucked out of a fairy tale. Peace pervades the atmosphere and if you close your eyes, you can well imagine Pandit Nehru rounding the corner, breathing in the fresh air and his freedom from the oppressive confines of Almora Jail.

The two-storeyed cottages have a quaint trapdoor connection with the lower floor. A horizontal door set into the wooden floor opens out onto the stairs connecting the lower level - an exciting set-up for kids.

Lounge in the sitting room, next to the fireplace, admire the 200-year-old Nataraja statuette in the library, gasp at the chandelier with 108 lamps and savour the vegetarian Gujarati thali sitting on a sawn off log in the garden.

Club Mahindra Valley Resort (Tel: 253028/ 62; 253174; Tariff: Rs 2,700-5,000 per couple) offering night camping, pony rides, pahadi massage, kiddies' playing area, library, indoor games and daily sightseeing tours, is located near the Binsar Sanctuary. There are several points to recommend KMVN'S Nanda Devi Tourist Rest House (Tel: 280176; Tariff: Rs 500-750), despite the lack of electricity. The view from the terrace is absolutely phenomenal. The wooden floors in the rooms have a delicious air about them and your room takes on a charming, 'olde worlde' air in candlelight. The staff is amazingly helpful and informative. Despite the lack of even basic medical care they have been performing yeoman service at Binsar.

In Almora, Kalmatia Sangam's (Tel:05962-233625; Tariff: Rs 1,700-6,550) tastefully designed cottages are a great option. Enjoy the views of the peaks from here. The resort organises safaris, guides, hiking, trekking, yoga and meditation.

Deodar Resort (Tel: 233025) at papparsalle offers painting lessons and yoga classes. Snow View Resort (Tel: 233650-51; Tariff: Rs 588-6,333), also in papparsalle, is another good option offering a restaurant, jacuzzi, sauna, yoga and fishing. KMVN has quite a presence here. There is the Gollu Deva Tourist Rest House (Tel: 230250; Tariff: Rs 450-750, dorm Rs 60) in Papparsalle and another KMVN property, TRH Danya (Tel: 230250; Tariff: Rs 200-300), on Almora's main road.

If you are on the tour of Binsar then do not miss the opportunity to visit the great and beautiful place named Almora. Almora, 33 km from Binsar, is one of the rare places in the hills - where short distances take hours to cover because of twisty, winding hill roads - which allows you to visit many places from one central point. Settle down in one of the many high altitude resorts dotting the hillsides for mountain views and cool, bracing air. Then pay visits to Binsar, Kausani, Ranikhet, Katarmal or Jageshwar.

In Almora itself, discover the art and culture of the Kumaon region at the Gobind Vallabh Pant Public Museum near the bus stand. You'll be surprised to find a very rare collection of 'Apen' folk paintings, apart from other treasures. Bright End Corner is the place to 'cat the air' and watch the sun rise and set over the hills.

Do also visit the Chitai Temple, a good 8 km from Almora. Soak in the atmosphere at this important shrine to Gollu Deva, who is the most popular Kumaon deity.

Almora has plenty of shopping centres, including the near 200-year-old Lal Bazaar. Among the more interesting buys arc angora cloth made from the fur of angora rabbits (not goats). Do also pickup some of Almora's speciality tamta (copper) vessels for your kitchen.

Come to Almora in September for the Nanda Devi Mela at the 100-year-old Nanda Devi Temple.
